MyHistro is an interactive site builder that can do both the Timeline feature like Dipity and the Map Builder feature like some of the others shared. It is pretty simple to use, but does require a log-in (free).
Project-Based Learning: Just like the timelines, this could be a nice way for a student to organize information and share it with others. I think the map portion adds some flexibility to the deliverable, making it useful for showing not just historical projects, but lots of geography and science as well.
Some ideas: students could use the maps to show evidence for geologic findings (there were trees in antartica?) and show those correlations across the earth; they could show migration patters of animals and humans; or they could use the map to discuss other theories about the history of the earth (and show evidence).
